Painting Sprinkler Pipes Red to Remove NYC Fire Department Violations
Color-coding of Exposed Pipes
As of February, 2010, NYC Building and Fire Department code requires a red color-coding of sprinkler pipes and standpipes. All buildings, no matter the size or occupancy, must have all exposed standpipes and sprinkler piping painted red. This law also requires that all dedicated standpipe valve handles be painted red, all combination standpipe valve handles must be painted yellow, and all dedicated sprinkler valve handles must be painted green. Violation of these requirements can result in a significant fine.
